FAAN appoints new regional managers for airports

January 13, 2008

As part of efforts aimed at ensuring the effective management of the nation's 21 airports and higher

level of accountability, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has appointed four regional managers to oversee their affairs.

The Managing Director of the Authority, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun, also on Sunday after a management meeting with all airport and terminal managers in Lagos, announced the redeployment of some of the officers and the appointment of some of their colleagues to the various airports.

Aisuebeogun explained that the new regional managers, who also head the four international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano, would monitor and supervise the activities of their colleagues in the other airports in their respective regions.

All the managers are expected to begin operations in their new capacities with effect from February 1, 2008, according to Aisuebeogun. The regional managers include the General Manager of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Mr. E.A. Olarerin, who will supervise activities at Ilorin, Ibadan, Akure and Benin airports; and Mr. Godknows Ugwuzor, the airport manager for Port Harcourt, who will watch operations at the Owerri, Calabar, Enugu and Osubi airports. Others are Mr. M.I. Ali-Nock, the new regional manager for the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, who will oversee operations at the Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Maiduguri and Zaria airports; and Mr. T.B. Bature, who was redeployed to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja from the Yakubu Gowon Airport, Jos. He has the Minna, Markudi, Bauchi, Jos and Yola airports under his jurisdiction to supervise.

Aisuebeogun enjoined the regional, airport and terminal managers to project FAAN more as a service-oriented agency, with its services surpassing the expectation of passengers, airline operators and other stakeholders in the industry. He added, "In the running of the airports, a holistic approach needs to be taken. Quality service delivery is one of the focal points of this administration. FAAN is a service provider. The customer is our reason for existence and we should take care of them. We must retain our customers by creating incentives for them. This is by encouraging them to continually use our airports. If we get customer service delivery right, all other things will fall into place. Airport managers should be proactive by exploring ways of developing routes in the interest of the operators and passengers without compromising safety."

He advised the managers to see the airports as business units with the exploration of the aeronautical and non-aeronautical avenues for the generation of revenue for the agency.

He said all allocations to the airports must be judiciously utilised with accounts rendered to the management by the managers before further allocations would be made to them for the maintenance of the airports.

He noted that on-the-spot assessment of each of the airports would always be conducted by the management to keep the managers on their toes.
