This view was expressed by the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. George Uriesi in his welcome address at the second meeting of the Aviation Statistical Committee for 2011 in Ota, Ogun State on Monday.

Mr. Uriesi challenged the committee to come up with a statistical data framework that would enhance decision making, and proffer solutions to challenges that are peculiar to the industry.

Mr. Uriesi who was represented at the event by FAAN’s Acting Director of Airport Operations, Mr. Tope Tubi, believed that the time had come for managers in the aviation industry to rise to the major challenges in the industry, including dwindling resources, by managing more effectively and efficiently, statistical appraisals of the major activities of the various agencies in the industry.

According to him, “detailed and constant information. ..will give the industry an edge over others, and enable us to weather the storm.” He praised the committee for its immense contribution to the development of the aviation industry.

In his keynote address at the occasion, Mr. A.S. Gurin, the Director of Planning, Procurement Analysis and Research in the Ministry of Aviation, who is also the Chairman of the Aviation Statistical Committee said that the vision of the present administration “is to build a safe, secure, orderly and efficient aviation industry in line with ICAO and IATA requirements and standards.”

Mr. Gurin noted that building such an aviation industry required meaningful planning and reliable statistical data. He therefore charged the committee to look into such critical areas as late provision of up to date airport by airport statistics of both passenger and aircraft movements, both within and outside the country.

He also said that there was the need to adopt a uniform format in the preparation of soft copies among agencies, apart from the need to synergise information within the various aviation agencies, in order to eliminate differences in the data generated.

The meeting, which is being attended by statisticians from the various parastatals under the Ministry of Aviation, will last for four days.
